A Question Nobody Thinks to Ask

Bury a seed upside down, sideways, or any way you like, and it will still grow the right way up, every single time. That should feel impossible. The seed is underground, in total darkness. It has no eyes and no brain. The soil looks the same in every direction. And somehow, within days, the root is heading down and the shoot is heading up, like the seed has a map.
Every gardener has felt that little worry while planting: wait, is this the right way up? Here is the happy truth. It does not matter. The seed cannot be planted wrong, because the seed carries its own built-in leveling tool, and that tool has never once failed in the entire history of plants.
This lesson shows you how that tool works, in plain words, and then shows you how to watch it happen with your own eyes on your windowsill. It is one of the coolest tricks in nature, and after today you will be able to explain it to anyone in about thirty seconds.
The Trick: Grains in a Snow Globe

Inside a sprouting seed are little pockets that work like tiny snow globes, and the secret is what floats inside them. Each pocket holds a few heavy little grains, called The tiny, heavy grains inside a seed's cells. They sink to the bottom of each cell, which is how the seed feels which way is down., and heavy things do the one thing they always do: they sink. Tip the seed any way you like, and inside every pocket those grains tumble down and pile up on whatever side is now the bottom.
That pile is the whole answer. Wherever the grains land, they press on that side, and the seed feels the pressing, the way you would feel a marble resting in your palm without looking at it. The seed does not see down. It feels down.
So the seed's compass is really just this: gravity pulls the statoliths, those heavy grains press on the bottom, and now the seed knows exactly which way is down, even in total darkness. Simple, reliable, and impossible to fool.

How the Seed Steers With No Muscles

A seed cannot move a muscle, because it does not have any, and yet it can steer. Here is how. Once those sinking heavy grains, the statoliths, tell the seed which way is down, the seed plays one clever card: it grows faster on one side than the other, by sending more of its growth signal (scientists call it auxin) to whichever side needs the push.
Think of a rowboat. If one oar pulls harder than the other, the boat turns. A root does the same thing. When the root wants to bend downward, it lets the top side grow a little faster than the bottom side, and that uneven growing curves the whole root toward the ground. The shoot does it in reverse, growing faster on its lower side so it bends up toward the light.
That is every turn a plant will ever make, its whole life. A root curving around a stone, a stem leaning toward a sunny window, a sprout finding its way to the surface. No muscles anywhere. Just one side growing a little faster than the other, in exactly the right spot, steered by a few grains that always know where down is.

The Upside-Down Seed's U-Turn

In nature, seeds land whichever way they fall, and not one of them cares. Plenty of them land sideways or even fully upside down, and here is what happens next. The root comes out pointing the wrong way, at the sky. Then the heavy grains inside, the statoliths, settle, the seed feels where down really is, and the root simply grows itself around in a smooth U-turn, curling through a half-circle until it is driving down into the earth like nothing happened.
The whole correction costs the seed a small snack's worth of its stored food and maybe a day of time. That is the entire penalty for being planted completely upside down.
And when you think about it, it had to work this way. Nobody plants seeds carefully in nature. They fall off plants, get buried by rain, kicked around by animals, and stashed by forgetful squirrels. Seeds were built for a messy world, which is exactly why they are so forgiving in your tidy one.

Why Planting Depth Is More Forgiving Than You Think

If the seed handles direction all by itself, what is actually left for you? Just one job: do not bury it deeper than its lunch can cover. Every seed is packed with its own little lunchbox of stored food, and that lunch has to power the whole climb from the seed up to the daylight. A deeper seed has a longer climb, so it needs a bigger lunch.
That is all the depth number on a seed packet really is: lunch math. Tiny seeds like lettuce carry a tiny lunch, so they sit right near the surface. Big seeds like beans and peas carry a feast, so they can start deeper and climb further. The old gardener's shortcut of planting a seed about twice as deep as it is wide is the same math in one line.
So here is your whole job as the planter, in two lines. Too shallow? The seed might dry out, and your watering can fixes that. Too deep? The seed spends its whole lunch climbing and starves in the dark, and nothing can fix that. One mistake is fixable and one is not, so whenever you are unsure, choose shallow.
Tip
When in doubt: shallower and moist beats deeper and dry. You can always keep the surface damp with a daily misting. You cannot refill a seed that ate its whole lunch climbing.

When Up Still Goes Wrong

When a seedling never shows up, direction is almost never the reason. The seed's built-in compass does not break. What breaks is the road. The usual roadblock is a crust: soil that got watered hard from above and then baked in the sun, forming a stiff lid. The little sprout climbs all the way up, perfectly on course, and then stalls with the finish line one millimetre away, pushing against a locked door.
The other roadblock is packed-down soil. Soil that has been walked on or pressed firm has lost its fluffiness, and a sprout that should be slipping through soft crumbs has to shoulder through something more like concrete.
Both problems have the same gentle fix: keep the surface soft. Water freshly planted spots with a light sprinkle instead of a hard pour, so the top never bakes into a shell, and keep feet and hands off the growing area. That fluffiness is not just for looks. It is the road up.
Tip
If a heavy rain crusts the soil over your seeds, lightly mist it a few times a day to keep the crust soft until the sprouts break through. You are not watering the seeds. You are unlocking the door above them.
