How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Twist or cut a pup (with a few roots) from the base of the parent, let it callus a day, then pot it in gritty mix. Effortless and true to type.

A tough, sculptural succulent with thick, gel-filled leaves that store water — so it thrives on bright light and infrequent watering. It readily produces baby offsets ('pups') around its base, which you simply detach and pot up. The classic mistakes are too little light (leggy, floppy leaves) and too much water (rot). Give it sun and a gritty, free-draining mix and it's nearly carefree.

Growing Tips

  • 1Aloe wants the brightest spot you have — bright light keeps it compact and upright (too little and the leaves stretch and flop).
  • 2Water deeply but only when the soil is fully dry, much less in winter, and always in a gritty, free-draining mix with drainage holes.
  • 3Leaves shrivelling means thirsty; leaves going soft, translucent or yellow means overwatered.
  • 4Keep it above ~5°C.
