How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

At repotting, separate the clump into sections, each with several leaves and roots — the standard, reliable method (it doesn't grow from cuttings).

A graceful, easy plant grown for both its lush leaves and its white flower 'sails' (spathes) — and famous for telling you when it's thirsty: the whole plant dramatically droops, then perks back up within hours of watering. It even tolerates low light (though it flowers more with bright indirect light). It grows as a clump of crowns you divide to propagate. Toxic to pets if chewed.

Growing Tips

  • 1Peace lilies are forgiving: bright, indirect light brings the most flowers (they survive shade but bloom less), and they'll signal thirst by drooping — though try not to rely on that, as repeated wilting stresses them.
  • 2Keep the soil lightly moist, mist or group with other plants if your air is dry, and remove spent flower stalks at the base.
  • 3Brown leaf tips usually mean dry air or tap-water minerals.
