How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Pin a dangling baby onto a pot of soil (still attached to the parent) until it roots, then snip it free — or root one in water. Effortless.

A cheerful, super-easy classic — and one of the few houseplants that's NON-toxic to cats and dogs. Mature plants send out long arching stems tipped with baby plantlets ('spiderettes'), so they practically propagate themselves: just pot up a baby. It tolerates a wide range of light and watering, and quickly fills a hanging basket. Brown leaf tips usually just mean dry air or fluoride in tap water — harmless.

Growing Tips

  • 1Spider plants are wonderfully tolerant: bright, indirect light keeps the variegation crisp, and watering when the top dries suits them.
  • 2Brown tips? Usually dry air or minerals/fluoride in tap water — try filtered or rainwater and don't worry, it's cosmetic.
  • 3They like being a little pot-bound, and reward you with armfuls of free babies.
