How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

A single self-fertile plant crops well. Plant in spring, 180 cm apart; it tolerates almost any soil and some shade.

Aronia (chokeberry) is one of the toughest, most disease-free fruits you can grow — hardy to about -40°C, self-fertile, and unbothered by pests. The very dark berries are intensely high in antioxidants but astringent raw, so they're mostly cooked, juiced or dried. Great fall colour too.

Step 2

Planting & Sprouting

Growing Tips

  • 1Aronia is the definition of low-maintenance: plant it, and it crops heavily in sun or part shade, in almost any soil, with no pests to speak of.
  • 2A light winter prune to remove old stems keeps it productive.
  • 3Lovely red autumn foliage as a bonus.

When to Pick

Pick when berries are deep black and soft, late summer–autumn

How to Harvest

  • 1Pick the clusters once the berries are deep black and slightly soft — they hang on the bush a long time, so there's no rush, and birds tend to leave the astringent fruit alone.
  • 2Best cooked or juiced.
