How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Start with rooted cuttings/plants set 30 cm apart into an acidic, peaty, always-moist bed (a sunken container of ericaceous mix works well).

A low evergreen creeping vine. You DON'T need to flood a bog — home cranberries just need very acidic (pH 4–5), constantly moist, peaty soil and full sun. The flooded bogs you've seen are only for commercial harvest. Slow to start (3 years to crop) but then long-lived.

Step 2

Planting & Sprouting

Growing Tips

  • 1Cranberries live or die by acidity and moisture: pH 4–5 and never drying out.
  • 2Grow them in a contained bed of peaty/ericaceous mix, keep it weeded (the low vines hate competition), and top-dress with sand every few years as commercial growers do.

When to Pick

Pick deep-red firm berries in autumn after the first frosts

How to Harvest

  • 1Pick (or comb) the firm, deep-red berries in autumn — a touch of frost deepens the colour and flavour.
  • 2A ripe cranberry bounces; soft ones are past it.
