How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Push pencil-thick dormant cuttings into moist ground in late winter; they root readily. Easiest and cheapest way to a hedge of them.

A big, fast, generous native shrub. Plant TWO different varieties for good pollination and heavier crops. IMPORTANT: raw elderberries, plus the leaves, stems and roots, are toxic — the berries must be cooked, and only the ripe berries and flowers are used.
